Passaic River

A bridge to memories

Responses to Mary's Reflections:

Sitting here in Florida, your site brings back memories. We lived on Butler Street, and walked many times up the Erie tracks, across the river to Hawthorne. We fished on that side, which was open to Waragaw Road, except for wells servicing Weidmann's Dye shop (across the river on 5th Avenue) annd a cornfield (we were told it was "cow corn" not edible by people).

We sat on the bank facing the dye shop on the other side that was spewing various colors of streaming water into the river. This was similar to the businesses up to the Great Falls. I often wonder what we ingested when eating the eels, catfish, suckers and carp 9large carp were sold to Mr. Brown, who ran the little candy store near Sparrow St.

Mary Zanfino, wrote about the Great Falls near her home. My father was proud to have been one of the masons who built the power house there. When there was high water, we would go to see the spectacular falls. One could walk across the bridge, pass Hinchliffe Stadium to a small footbridge (that was closed) that spanned the gorge. There were no fences or warnings and it is a wonder that few people fell in. Downstream one could climb down the cliff and walk on a small service road toward West Broadway.

In the late 1920's my mother, and others would walk us from Butler St. to Pennington Prk. It had a pavilion, where I bought my first (of many) box of Cracker jacks. The toys enclosed were prized. The park had swimming, boating, fishing and picnics were often held there. Occasionally, we crossed (I believed on a footbridge) to Westside Park that was more formal and featured the Holland submarine. Pennignton Park had a monument honoring WWI veterans. Climbing on the cannon was enjoyed, with little thought that most of us would see service with similar weapons in WWII. Some did not come back to visit the parks or the river...To be continued ....George DeCausemacker
